The script is you and me

When I came into possession of this clock, it was wrapped in newspapers dated 1961. It is broken and does not run, and, I assume, this is why it was in a box wrapped in newspapers more than a half-century old. I have no idea how old it actually is, and it makes me wonder. I wonder how many times its tick-tock has sounded at the conclusion of an old year never to be known again, and how many times its chimes have announced the birth of a new year born with hope and anticipation of a better life .... I wonder. I wonder how many eyes have focused intently on this clock to watch it slip from one year to the next. I wonder how many shouts of "Happy New Year" it has heard. (Did you notice? We have moved from us watching it to it observing us, as if this clock were as alive as we. (Is it, in its own way?) I wonder how many lips it has witnessed kiss as a pledge of sorts to live better and faithfully and bravely into the unknown future of the coming year. I have located a horologist who will repair this rather dismal (in appearance) "creature" and make it run again. He will bring it back to life again, sort of .... I think. In a sense, those who watch time remain part of life as long as time exists; those who measure time come and go, arrive and leave, with the passing years. As for the music about time posted here today, take your pick which melody, which set of words, if either, is a reflection of you. As for today and tomorrow, make them whatever you wish them to be: The coming "happy new year" is your year to be what you make it. See you there ....

It is time to say 'Happy New Year' to you, Fram!
A brand new year!
A clean slate on which to write
our hopes and dreams.
This year:
Less time and energy on things;
More time and energy on people.
All of life’s best rewards,
deepest and finest feelings,
greatest satisfactions,
come from people--
people like you.

Happy New Year!

Well, this clock is not so old, Anita. Perhaps, one hundred years or a bit more.

And, it never will play music.

But, I am sure it has a dignified tick-tock and a sweet chime.

I like old clocks and watches, just as I like old firearms and old coins. They each have stories of their own which require little imagination to discover. They possess their own form of magic for anyone who is willing to search it out.

I will be a mirror reflecting your wish to me, Anita: May all your dreams come true. Happy New Year 2013! See you there.

Yes, it is a brand new year, Daliana, already for you in Romania as I write this, and in just a few more hours for me, here, in the middle of America.

The verse you have written for me is very touching and wonderful, and means a great deal to me. Thank you.

I believe you already are aware that I have been walking along an unmarked path for well over a year following a distant light to discover where it might lead me. I am hopeful that 2013 will be the year I finally reach the source of that light.

In some of my older posts, I have written that I learned the sanctuary I thought I had found in a house on a hilltop turned out to be much less than that, non-existent, in fact, and, subsequently, I had come to believe sanctuary could only be found in people and not in places. So, perhaps the light in the distance will lead me to actual sanctuary in the form of a person in 2013. That is my hope for myself.

My hope for you is that whatever you seek in life -- your own sanctuary, success, happiness .... whatever -- will be found in 2013, as well, Daliana. Happy New Year!

Yes, it is, Daliana. Thank you, for the wish. My voice echoes this same wish back to you in Romania: Have the best year of your life in 2013.

Neither good nor bad, Anita.

Many places along the northern tier of the U.S. have similar terrain to that found in Norway. The warmth of the south is pleasant, but the beauty of the north cannot be matched.
