A day for remembrance

These are the times that try men's souls ....

Memorial Day will be observed on Monday, May 25, this year. As you might guess, I prefer the traditional (the actual) Memorial Day, but Congress and most "patriotic Americans" do not. No three-day weekend necessarily when the traditional was observed, and we all know our priorities, do we not? I will be gone from Friday morning until Monday evening, or Tuesday, and otherwise would have posted this photograph on Monday.

Hopefully, this photograph, of an American cemetery in Normandy, France, where I spent a few hours walking among the stones in 2004 -- 60 years after the deaths of these young men during World War II -- will be a reminder for each of us to spend a few minutes in prayer or in commemoration or in remembrance for those who died in the cause of individual liberty and freedom -- and, not just for Americans, but for all people everywhere.

Stay safe, picnic in peace, as well, remember your heritage and the price so many have paid to ensure your right to be the .... never mind .... it is your freedom to retain or to squander .... at the ultimate cost so many others have paid for it ....

My mother is just back from a 5 day trip to visit the Belgian war graves (Ypres & around). They visited to pay their respects at the graves of the fallen from many nations and of those unknown. Looking at those rows of white crosses is unbearably sad.

On a slightly lighter note, she went with a group - all of them older folk and some, like her, disabled and not in the best of health - who Christened themselves "The Walking Stick Brigade" for the duration.

Have a great weekend Fram

Hello Fram :) This is a nice post. It is important for us all to remember the sacrifices that many great men and women have made for our freedom.
Thank you!
I hope you're having a Super Happy Memorial Day trip and I'll see you when you get back!

Thank you, to the magical five who left a comment here for me. I will make an effort to greet each of you later today, and to catch up with your posts, as well.

What do five points create, other than a star?

What an unusual parallel,
Mr. Fram, “What do five points create…” – just brilliant!
P.S. I am sure that an 8-hour time difference “derailed” me a bit(!!), but today you impressed more than ever!!

LOL, I agree with Natalie, Fram :) You are very impressive!
Have a Happy Day!

Rachael .... Catching up is not fun. It seemed so few people were writing the past couple of weeks, now so many have during the few days I was absent. Run, run, run.

Katy .... I would like to see those places someday. I envy your mother's excursion. My lineage includes one who fought in France in 1918 with the 308th Infantry (Army). He was a boy fresh from the farm. What a culture shock he must have experienced in that era.

Kelly .... Thank you. Some things always hover in the background of my mind, such as this cemetary, or the one in Arlington, Virgina, or the one in Fort McPherson, Nebraska.

CiL .... Thank you. Some holidays are manufactured. A few, like Memorial Day, actually deserve to be and, in a way, demand to be.

Natalie .... You are the traveler extraordinaire this Spring. It sounds like you are happy, which makes me happy. You be well, too, Russian girl, and make contact whenever it is possible.

Something special ....
